Effects of using cell phone

How many people in the world are using cell phones? Just 20 years ago, a cell phone was heavy to carry and uncomfortable to use. However, ‘modern day - cell phone’ is an only hand-size, less than 1kg and easy to carry. Also, people do not have to carry TV, calendar, map, calculator or computer; these products in one cell phone. So cell phone is one of the important products in modern days and has a large impact on our life. However, because of multi tasking cell phone, people are getting a more comfortable life. However, sometimes the technology is effecting badly to our quality of life. For example, cell phone could be affecting to chance of accident increased, patient of new disease syndrome increased, and people addicted to a cell phone.

Most people have had an experience using a phone on the road. We cannot focus on the road. Cell phone use causes over 25% the car accidents. Texting is the most dangerous act on the road. We can look around while talking and listening music, but while texting, a driver needs to look at the screen; so a driver cannot focus on the road. And…Boom. So as to protect the accidents, Georgia law tightly restrict about texting while driving. By Georgia texting law, all drivers are prohibited from texting while driving. But the law creates exceptions for emergency personnel, drivers responding to emergencies, and drivers who are fully parked. Cell phone can be a good educational device. A lot of information is flooding above our heads. Phones are catching the information, and show us the information that makes us educated persons. But furthermore the passion for getting information at night time is making our eyes bad. For example, if the college students are researching the homework until midnight all days, their eyes will be tired. The other problems are the carpal tunnel syndrome. The carpal tunnel syndrome is one of the rages for the young generation. The carpal tunnel syndrome is a condition characterized by pain and tingling in the fingers, caused by pressure on a nerve as it passes under the ligament situated across the front of the wrist.(dictionary.com) Using cell phones too much is one cause of carpal tunnel syndrome. The third problem is electromagnetic waves. Electromagnetic waves do not affect for our body directly, but many scientists are warning seriously about biological change caused by cell phone frequencies. The electronic waves affect gene and protein expression, immune function, Neurology and behavior. So, would better to avoid electronic waves away from your body.

Addiction is one of the problems. So many people addicted to cell phones already.The professor Lesile Perlow, PhD, the Konosuke Matsushita professor of leadership at the Harvard Business School, found that: 70% of people check their smart phone within an hour of getting up. 56% of people check their phone within an hour of going to sleep. 48% of people check over the weekend, including on Friday and Saturday nights. 51% of people check continuously during vacation. 44% people said they felt “worry” if they lost their phones. During face to face conversation, a phone is big an impediment. People are having a conversation with phone, even though their friend is front of them. Another cause of addiction is mobile games. Mobile game is reason of phone addiction. Game addiction among teenagers has been a huge problem in society.

The Phone is really a important product in our life, but the cell phone is a double edged sword. The cell phone is giving us good quality of life. However, the cell phone is also hurting us. Problems of using cell phones are on the increase every year and every second. Thus, to prevent these problems we should use cell phone correctly. The government could make a solution to prevent these problems. Also, parents should educate the child how to use cell phone correctly. We can prevent these problems.

  1. Dustin, I love how you prevent such a balanced overview of both the positives and negatives of cellphones. At this point, I can't imagine living without my cellphone any more--for all of the reasons you mention--but the consequences of overuse are certainly very serious, and you do a nice job of raising our awareness of them here. I am obviously very worried about the risk of accidents when people use cellphones while driving, but you've also reminded me about what I think is a more overlooked concern, which is the negative impact on face-to-face social interaction when we are unwilling to just put our phones down and really "be" with the people we are with. Thanks for raising these important issues.
